 It’s a big-screen adaptation of a 1970’s sci-fi tv show! Don’t look at it, Marion!

If you are someone who watches a lot of movies, it may be inevitable that you develop a list of films that you feel certain affection for, even if those films have no redeeming qualities. It might be ‘Beastmaster’, or ‘Dreamscape’ or even ‘Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins,’ but most of us have a celluloid skeleton in our closets, a film we can’t possibly defend but we try to anyway.

For me, ‘Lost in Space’ is just such a film. I had seen it once years ago when I first came out on video, just a curiosity, as I never much cared for the original series. The film didn’t leave much of a mark on me then but now that it is available as part of my cable company’s on demand menu, I’ve watched it three times.

Maidens and Matrons
Yes, folks, this is my Maiden Voyage Blog for BBT. Oh an auspicious day indeed, a day that will scar people’s lives and remain in their memories for a least a good 15 seconds. So, I’ll not dawdle away the precious moments remaining as your synapses atrophy. Let’s begin, shall we.

Okay, technically, I’m your BBT Horror Chick, but you’re going to find a veritable potpourri (see, girlie word already!) of topics in this blog. It all depends on the meds and the way the light catches my eye when the shiny things hanging in my cell move in the stale wind…but I digress. You’ll find that I’m easily entertained by the most mundane things, some would say bizarre things, especially images caught on film…or pixels or whatnot. What can I say - they inspire me. So, when I find something entertaining (movies, books, interviews, websites, events, etc), you’re going to hear about it right here at the BBT on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month or as long as the boss man will have me.

Okay, it’s the time of the year – Summer Blockbuster Time!  Despite the fact that I have nice widescreen HD TV in my house and a big comfy chair to watch movies there are still times when I prefer to experience a new movie with a crowd of strangers.  There’s just something about Spiderman and yes, even The Fantastic Four that makes the viewing experience more memorable when experienced with a crowd.  That means I venture out of my house to a movie theater.

The thing is I am finding the movie theater to be a less and less enjoyable experience.

Movie Reviews with BBT Critic Jef Taylor

I thought District B13 (a French-made Jacky Chan rip-off) was the most thoroughly derivative and entertaining action movie made in the past ten years, but Soldier comes pretty close. It’s rather more derivative and a and maybe a little less entertaining, but still more fun than I expected.

SS-smaillMovie Reviews with BBT Critic Jef Taylor

I watched Curse of the Komodo so you don’t have to.  Sick bastard that I am, I made my friend Alex watch it with me.  When I told her that I was considering watching it a second time, (strictly for review purposes) she told me "you couldn’t pay me to watch it again."  She also advised that I change the dvd settings and watch it in Spanish, " at least then you’d be learning something."

You will forgive me if, this week, I fail to write about Pirates of the Burning Sea, which I have played not at all. Video games must actively work to hold my attention, which is inclined to slip away at any moment and go find a book,  a movie, a song, a thought. Pirates are fun, but my attention has slipped. For now.

I knew all week that I wasn’t going to write about a video game this time around, and so I’d been stewing on what to write about. Mostly, I think I already knew what was coming. It’s been coming for a year or so, and I think it may as well go here, because this is a good place. We do not always speak seriously or meaningfully, but we are capable of it. I’m sorry, there are no laughs I expect in this article. I could write about my twilight zone trip to the Twin Cities, but I don’t think the joke would come across properly.

So I will write this instead.
